The complete lack of support structure in the (Methodist) Church for gays and lesbians makes gay and lesbian Methodists big losers. If the gay or lesbian person is sexually active, then they are not very well accepted within the Church. And if they are celibate, then they live lonely lives knowing that they will have no children or partner there at the end of their lives, and they’ll still evoke strong negative reaction from many people. The conventional Church simply does not find much of a place for such an unconventional person. Would a “singles group” be a good place for such a person? Where do they fit? In the closet is about the only place they’re really welcome in most Churches.
